Edward VII, King of the United Kingdom, 1901. Artist: Samuel Begg

Edward VII, King of the United Kingdom, 1901. Before his accession to the throne in 1901, Edward (1841-1910) held the title of Prince of Wales, and has the distinction of having been heir apparent to the throne longer than anyone in English or British history. His reign saw the first official recognition of the office of the Prime Minister in 1905. He was the first British monarch of the House of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, which was renamed by his son, George V, as the House of Windsor. From The Illustrated London News, 1901

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Edward VII, the King of the United Kingdom in 1901. The artist behind this remarkable piece is Samuel Begg. Prior to his ascension to the throne, Edward held the prestigious title of Prince of Wales and holds a unique record as the longest-serving heir apparent in English or British history. During his reign, which spanned from 1901 until his passing in 1910, Edward played a pivotal role in shaping British politics. Notably, he oversaw the official recognition of the Prime Minister's office in 1905, marking an important milestone for governance within Britain. Edward VII was also significant for being the first monarch from the House of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. However, it was his son George V who renamed their house as Windsor. In this portrait captured by Begg and featured in The Illustrated London News in 1901, we see King Edward VII exuding regal elegance while donning traditional Scottish attire amidst breathtaking highland scenery. Dressed impeccably with a deerstalker hat and tweed jacket over a kilt, he embodies both royal sophistication and an appreciation for leisurely pursuits such as hunting. The photograph not only captures Edward's majestic presence but also offers us a glimpse into early 20th-century fashion trends and historical significance. It serves as a testament to one of Britain's influential monarchs whose reign left an indelible mark on both political structures and cultural traditions within Great Britain and beyond.
