The Duke of Norfolk's Almshouses, in 1796
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print takes us back to the late 18th century, capturing the architectural beauty of The Duke of Norfolk's Almshouses. Founded by Henry Howard, Earl of Northampton in 1613, this charitable institution provided shelter for twelve impoverished men from Greenwich and eight from Shottisham in Norfolk. The image showcases the grandeur of these almshouses situated on the banks of the River Thames, now a part of greater London. Its intricate design reflects both English heritage and classical architecture prevalent during that era. The monochrome tones lend a timeless quality to this historical snapshot. As we gaze upon this scene, our eyes are drawn to sailboats gracefully gliding along the river. They serve as a reminder that transportation played an essential role in connecting communities during this period. The boats symbolize not only movement but also prosperity brought about by trade and commerce. This photograph is sourced from "Old and New London: A Narrative of Its History, Its People, And Its Places" written by Edward Walford in 1878. It offers us a glimpse into a world where charity coexisted with architectural splendor amidst bustling city life. Through this image, we can appreciate how philanthropy shaped landscapes across Britain while simultaneously providing for those less fortunate. It serves as a testament to the enduring legacy left behind by individuals like Henry Howard who sought to make positive changes within their communities.
