Druid-Hill Park, 1874 - A Serene Oasis in the Heart of Baltimore

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print transports us back to the enchanting Druid-Hill Park in 1874. Created by John Filmer, this image captures a picturesque scene of sheep grazing peacefully amidst the lush greenery of one of Baltimore's most cherished landmarks. Originally purchased by the City of Baltimore in 1860, Druid-Hill Park was meticulously designed by Howard Daniels. The park boasted various attractions, including its most notable waterway, Druid Lake, which served as a vital reservoir for the city's public water system. As we delve into this historical snapshot from "Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In" edited by William Cullen Bryant, we are reminded that even during this era nature played an essential role in providing solace and escape from bustling urban life. However, it is important to acknowledge that recreation facilities within the park were racially segregated at that time. This reminder serves as a testament to our progress towards equality and inclusivity over the years. John Filmer's skillful wood engraving showcases not only his artistic prowess but also highlights Granville Perkins' talent for capturing natural landscapes. Through their collaboration on this print, they have immortalized a moment where tranquility meets nature's beauty within Druid-Hill Park. Let us cherish this glimpse into history and appreciate how such green spaces continue to offer respite and inspiration today.
