Domestic Shrine, c. 1479-1425 BC. Creator: Unknown

Domestic Shrine, c. 1479-1425 BC. Used in the home like an icon, this shrine was originally provided with two wooden doors, hinged at each side and bolted in the center. The upper and lower sockets for the pivots of these doors still survive. The worshiper opened the doors to reveal the representation of King Tuthmosis III seated in front of an offering table. The hieroglyphic inscription at the base tells us that the shrine was made for the tomb worker Amenemheb. The carving is clearly in the style of Tuthmosis IIIs reign, showing that such objects of private veneration were produced during the kings lifetime

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of ancient Egyptian art known as the "Domestic Shrine" created between 1479 and 1425 BC. The identity of its creator remains unknown, adding an air of mystery to this intriguing artifact. Originally used in homes like an icon, this shrine featured two wooden doors that were hinged at each side and bolted in the center. Astonishingly, the upper and lower sockets for these pivots have managed to survive through time. Opening the doors would reveal a stunning representation of King Tuthmosis III seated before an offering table. This depiction was carved in limestone and originally painted, showcasing exquisite craftsmanship from Egypt's New Kingdom period. A hieroglyphic inscription found at the base informs us that this shrine was specifically made for Amenemheb, a tomb worker during that era. The carving style clearly reflects Tuthmosis III's reign, indicating that such objects of private veneration were produced during his lifetime. This valuable sculpture is believed to have originated from the Theban area within Dynasty 18 Egypt. Now housed within The Cleveland Museum of Art, this Domestic Shrine serves as a testament to the rich cultural heritage left behind by ancient civilizations. Thanks to Heritage Art/Heritage Images' meticulous preservation efforts and their stunning print reproduction, viewers can marvel at this extraordinary piece from thousands of years ago with great detail and appreciation for its historical significance.
