Christ in the Temple, 1879, (1914). Creator: Max Liebermann

Christ in the Temple, 1879, (1914). The Twelve-Year-Old Jesus in the Temple, first exhibited in 1879, caused a scandal, with critics berating Liebermann for depicting the Saviour as a Jewish urchin. Liebermann, a Jew himself, felt constrained to overpaint the figure of Jesus, making him fairer haired and more European-looking, in an attempt at appeasement in the anti-semitic atmosphere of the time. Painting in the Hamburger Kunsthalle, Germany. From " Bibbys Annual 1914", edited by Joseph Bibby. [J. Bibby & Sons, London, 1914]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Max Liebermann's controversial painting, "Christ in the Temple" exhibited in 1879. The artwork caused a scandal at the time, as critics berated Liebermann for portraying Jesus as a Jewish urchin. Being of Jewish descent himself, Liebermann felt compelled to appease the anti-Semitic atmosphere by overpainting Jesus with fairer hair and a more European appearance. The image showcases this historical painting housed in the Hamburger Kunsthalle in Germany. It was featured in "Bibbys Annual 1914" edited by Joseph Bibby, offering readers an insight into art and literature during that period. This particular edition aimed to provide diverse content while reflecting on societal attitudes prevalent at the time. Liebermann's portrayal of Christ challenges traditional depictions found within Christianity. By presenting Jesus as a young boy engaging with others inside a synagogue, he offers viewers an alternative perspective on religious narratives. Despite facing criticism for his artistic choices, Liebermann's work serves as a testament to his courage and willingness to challenge prevailing norms. Through this photograph print, we are reminded of the power of art to provoke conversations about religion, identity, and prejudice throughout history.
