Chimney Rocks, 1872. Creator: William Ludwell Sheppard

Chimney Rocks, 1872. Unusual rock formation in West Virginia, USA: At the butt of a sharp spur rises a towering architectural mass, which any one familiar with the Old World would pronounce a well-preserved feudal ruin, and a purely American imagination would conceive to be the chimneys of a burnt factory...it is difficult to divest ones self of the idea that human hands must have played some part in the erection of the pile before us. So regular and square cut is the masonry, so shapely the towers, so artistically true the embattled summits, the supporting buttresses, the jutting turrets, the cold, gray walls, dappled with lichens, moss, and weather-stains-all combined so artfully to mimic the " ruined castle of romance", that the garish light of a summer morning is scarcely strong enough to dispel the illusion. From " Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In, A Delineation by Pen and Pencil of the Mountains, Rivers, Lakes...with Illustrations on Steel and Wood by Eminent American Artists" Vol. I, edited by William Cullen Bryant. [D. Appleton and Company, New York, 1872]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Chimney Rocks, 1872" and captured by the talented William Ludwell Sheppard, transports us to a remarkable natural wonder in West Virginia, USA. The image showcases an extraordinary rock formation that appears as if it were a well-preserved feudal ruin from the Old World or perhaps the chimneys of a burnt factory according to American imagination. As we gaze upon this photograph, it becomes increasingly difficult to believe that human hands did not play a role in constructing this architectural marvel before us. The masonry is so impeccably regular and square cut, while the towers rise with such grace and precision. The embattled summits, supporting buttresses, jutting turrets, and cold gray walls adorned with lichens, mosses, and weather-stains all conspire harmoniously to mimic the romantic allure of a ruined castle. Even under the garish light of a summer morning depicted in this print, one can hardly dispel the illusion created by these masterfully crafted structures. It is as though they were plucked straight out of our most vivid dreams or tales of adventure. This mesmerizing image comes from "Picturesque America; or The Land We Live In" edited by William Cullen Bryant and published by D. Appleton and Company in 1872. It serves as both an artistic testament to nature's ability to inspire awe-inspiring beauty and as evidence of Sheppard's exceptional skill behind the lens.
