EDITORS COMMENTS
This carte-de-visite portrait captures the essence of John W. Menard, a trailblazer in American history. Taken between 1868 and 1870 by photographer William H. Leeson, this image showcases Menard's remarkable achievements as the first black man ever elected to the United States House of Representatives. Menard's body is turned nearly in profile, emphasizing his left side, while his head turns slightly towards the viewer, creating an intriguing sense of mystery. His hair is neatly parted on the left side and smoothly styled on top, contrasting with its natural curls on the sides. A distinguished mustache adds to his air of authority. Dressed in a dark-colored jacket, white shirt, and a dark bowtie, Menard exudes elegance and sophistication. The intentional fading at the bottom portion of the photograph reflects popular artistic styles of that era. The photograph is housed within an album page adorned with a triple-lined gold border that further enhances its visual appeal. Handwritten text in graphite identifies Swymmer & Leeson as well as J. Willis Menard at the bottom of this print. This print not only preserves an important historical moment but also serves as a testament to John W. Menard's significant contributions to American politics during a time when racial barriers were being challenged and shattered.
