Calligraphy, Persian Verses (verso), c. 1440-1520. Creator: Unknown

Calligraphy, Persian Verses (verso), c. 1440-1520. The handsome youth lassoing the feisty colt in this painting is Rustam, the Shahnamas most popular hero. A favorite episode for illustrating, this event marks a turning point in the fortunes of Iran and offers the artist a wonderful pictorial opportunity. The episode occurs in a time of trouble for Iran -- the throne is empty and a foreign army invades the land. The country needs a mighty warrior to fight for her, and the young Rustam is ready for the challenge -- once he finds a horse that can bear his enormous weight! The herds are gathered for Rustams inspection: a piebald bay colt catches his eye. For three years no one has been able to capture the colt, known as " Rustams Rakhsh." Rustam asks what price the herdsman wants for him. The reply: " If you are a true Rustam -- a true deliverer -- mount him and make the land of Iran aright. The cost of Rakhsh is the soil of Iran and the deliverance of the world!"

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a mesmerizing piece of calligraphy, featuring Persian verses from the 15th to 16th century. The focus lies on the verso side, where an exquisite painting unfolds before our eyes. In this artwork, we witness Rustam, the beloved hero of Shahnama, skillfully lassoing a spirited colt. This particular scene holds immense significance as it symbolizes a pivotal moment in Iran's history. During a tumultuous period when foreign forces threatened Iran's sovereignty and its throne lay vacant, the nation yearned for a formidable warrior to defend its honor. Enter Rustam - young and courageous - who eagerly accepts the challenge but faces one obstacle: finding a horse capable of carrying his colossal weight. As fate would have it, amidst herds gathered for inspection stands Rakhsh - an elusive piebald bay colt that has eluded capture for three long years. Rustam is immediately drawn to Rakhsh's beauty and potential. He approaches the herdsman with determination and asks about acquiring this remarkable creature. The response he receives is both profound and demanding: "If you are truly Rustam - a true deliverer - mount him and restore glory to Iran. The price of Rakhsh is nothing less than the soil of Iran itself and salvation for all". This visually striking image not only captures Rustam's heroic spirit but also encapsulates the essence of Iranian resilience in times of adversity. It serves as an artistic testament to bravery, sacrifice, and unwavering devotion towards safeguarding one's homeland – themes that continue to resonate through centuries past into our present day.
