Book of Hours (Use of Rouen): fol. 94v, c. 1470. Creator: Master of the Geneva Latini (French

Book of Hours (Use of Rouen): fol. 94v, c. 1470. In the late 1400s and early 1500s Rouen was an established and important center of book production. The citys cathedral had a wealthy chapter that spent large sums of money to commission books and to maintain its extensive library. The stationers and booksellers would have likely been concentrated in or near the cathedral precinct. This artist, named after a manuscript now in Geneva, was Rouens principal illuminator during the second half of the 1400s

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a page from the "Book of Hours (Use of Rouen): fol. 94v" created around 1470 by the talented Master of the Geneva Latini. During this period, Rouen emerged as a prominent hub for book production, with its cathedral serving as a patron and custodian of an extensive library. The illuminated manuscript featured in this image exemplifies the exquisite craftsmanship and attention to detail characteristic of Rouen's flourishing book industry. The artist's mastery is evident in their delicate brushwork, intricate gold embellishments, and vibrant colors rendered with ink and tempera on velvety vellum. The Book of Hours was a popular devotional text during the Middle Ages, containing prayers and psalms to guide individuals through daily religious practices. This particular page represents folio 94 verso (back), revealing an enchanting scene that transports viewers into a spiritual realm. As we admire this remarkable piece, it is worth noting that the Master of the Geneva Latini earned their name from another manuscript now housed in Geneva. Their contributions significantly shaped illuminations produced in Rouen during the latter half of the fifteenth century. Preserved at The Cleveland Museum of Art, this precious artifact serves as both a testament to medieval artistry and an invaluable window into Rouen's rich cultural heritage.
