Beppi, Bruno and Fabio playing cards, c1950. Creator: Shirley Markham
Beppi, Bruno and Fabio playing cards, c1950. Sketch in Tione, northern Italy. Shirley Markham (1931-1999) studied Graphic Design and Illustration at Central School of Art in London from 1950-1952. The writer, artist, poet, and illustrator Mervyn Peake (1911-1968) was one of her tutors, and her style of drawing was also influenced by other British illustrators such as Edward Ardizzone, Quentin Blake and Edward Bawden. Markham spent time in the Dolomite Mountains in Italy, and also visited Rome, sketching classical buildings. After graduating from Central, she worked as a graphic designer, producing book illustrations, cartoons for comics, menus and programmes. She gave up her promising career however when she got married in 1957. Middle-class women at that time were expected to devote their energies to bringing up children and running the home, and despite her obvious talent, she lacked the confidence to return to illustration. Her portfolio remained in the family attic for many years, but now her work is published here for the first time

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment of camaraderie and friendly competition amongst three friends, Beppi, Bruno, and Fabio, as they engage in a game of cards. Taken in Tione, northern Italy around 1950 by the talented artist Shirley Markham, this sketch beautifully showcases her unique style influenced by renowned British illustrators such as Mervyn Peake, Edward Ardizzone, Quentin Blake, and Edward Bawden. Markham's artistic journey began at Central School of Art in London where she studied Graphic Design and Illustration from 1950 to 1952 under the guidance of Mervyn Peake himself. Her passion for drawing led her to explore various landscapes including the Dolomite Mountains and Rome. These experiences inspired her to create stunning sketches that captured both classical architecture and everyday scenes like this one. Despite her undeniable talent as a graphic designer producing book illustrations, comics cartoons, menus, and programs after graduation from Central School of Art; societal expectations prevailed when she married in 1957. Middle-class women during that era were often encouraged to prioritize their roles as homemakers rather than pursuing professional careers. Sadly enough for art enthusiasts worldwide but fortunately for us today - Markham's remarkable portfolio remained hidden away in the family attic until now. This publication marks an exciting moment as we finally get to appreciate her exceptional work firsthand without any commercial intent or involvement. Through this photograph print titled "Beppi, Bruno and Fabio playing cards" we are transported back in time to witness not only a delightful card game between friends but also pay homage to Shirley Markham's incredible talent that has been unveiled after all these years.
