The Battle of Austerlitz, 2 December 1805, (c1850). Artist: Jean Bosq
The Battle of Austerlitz, 2 December 1805, (c1850). Commanded by the Emperor of the French in person. Regarded as Napoleon Bonapartes greatest victory, Austerlitz was a sublime trap that destroyed the armies of his enemies Russia and Austria. Tricking his opponents into thinking he was weaker than he actually was, and then calling in nearby reinforcements. The French emperor deliberately abandoned a strong central position on the Pratzen Heights and left his right flank weak. The Allies eagerly moved forward to occupy the heights and then weakened the centre to crush the French right. As the bulk of Austrian and Russian troops attacked, Marshal Davouts III Corp arrived to bolster the French line. After much hard fighting the French crushed the Allies. Thousands of fleeing troops drowned when a frozen lake split under the weight of men and guns. French losses amounted to 8000 while the Russian and Austrian emperors, present at the battle, saw more than 27, 000 men killed, wounded and captured. Bonaparte also captured 180 cannon. Print from a series depicting the campaigns of Napoleon I, published c1850

The Battle of Austerlitz, 2 December 1805 - Napoleon's Sublime Trap
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures the intensity and strategic brilliance of one of Napoleon Bonaparte's greatest victories - The Battle of Austerlitz. Painted by Jean Bosq in approximately 1850, this artwork depicts a pivotal moment in history when the French emperor outwitted his enemies, Russia and Austria. Napoleon cunningly deceived his opponents by feigning weakness while secretly calling for reinforcements. He deliberately abandoned a strong central position on the Pratzen Heights, enticing the Allies to occupy it and weaken their center. Little did they know that Marshal Davouts III Corp was en route to bolster the French line. As thousands of Austrian and Russian troops attacked with fervor, Davout's arrival turned the tide in favor of France. After relentless fighting, the French emerged victorious, crushing their adversaries. However, tragedy struck as fleeing soldiers met their demise when a frozen lake beneath them split under the weight of men and guns. The battle resulted in significant losses for both sides. The French suffered around 8,000 casualties but managed to capture an impressive haul of 180 cannons. In contrast, more than 27,000 men from Russia and Austria were killed or captured during this monumental clash. This remarkable print is part of a series depicting Napoleon I's campaigns published around 1850—a testament to both its historical significance and artistic beauty.
