Annunciation to the Shepherds: Leaf from a Book of Hours (1 of 6 Excised Leaves), c

Annunciation to the Shepherds: Leaf from a Book of Hours (1 of 6 Excised Leaves), c. 1420-1430. This group of leaves survive from what must have been an extraordinarily rich book of hours. The elaborate Passion cycle and Suffrages point to an important patron. Internal evidence within the original calendar and texts indicates that Metz was the probable place of production. Stylistically, the illuminations appear to come from the workshop of Henri d Orquevaulx, a documented Metz manuscript painter. Little is known about d Orquevaulxs life or career. Compositionally, structurally, and stylistically, the miniatures suggest strong links to Netherlandish illumination. It is not known whether d Orquevaulx came originally from the Netherlands or whether he simply worked or trained there at some point in his career

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures a leaf from a Book of Hours, dating back to the 15th century. The surviving group of leaves suggests that this book was once an incredibly lavish and important piece. The intricate Passion cycle and Suffrages indicate the involvement of a significant patron, while internal evidence points to Metz as the likely place of production. The illuminations found within these pages bear strong resemblance to the work of Henri d Orquevaulx, a documented manuscript painter from Metz. Unfortunately, little is known about d Orquevaulx's life or career, leaving us with tantalizing mysteries surrounding his origins and training. What is clear is that these miniatures exhibit compositional brilliance, structural integrity, and stylistic connections to Netherlandish illumination. Whether d Orquevaulx hailed from the Netherlands or simply gained inspiration or training there remains uncertain. Presented in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, this manuscript now resides in The Cleveland Museum of Art. This print by Heritage Art/Heritage Images allows us to appreciate every delicate detail captured within its pages - a testament to the enduring beauty and historical significance of illuminated manuscripts like this one.
