Aeneas and His Family Fleeing Troy, 1595. Creator: Agostino Carracci (Italian, 1557-1602)

Aeneas and His Family Fleeing Troy, 1595. Created at the end of the 1500s, this print stylistically marks the end of Renaissance art. Baroccis swirling, emotional composition and the intensity of Agostinos engraved network of lines prefigure the rise of Baroque art in the 1600s. However, ancient legends such as the Trojan War, revived and popularized during the Renaissance, continued to inspire artists for centuries to come. Here, Aeneas carries his elderly father Anchises, who in turn rescues small statues of their household gods while the city of Troy burns. Both acts stress the mens virtuous dedication to home and family. Aeneass young son Ascanius and his wife Creusa flee with them, but Creusas separation from the group alludes to her fate: she falls behind and is lost as the Greeks invade the city

Aeneas and His Family Fleeing Troy, 1595

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print created by Agostino Carracci at the end of the 16th century. This artwork not only represents a stylistic transition from Renaissance to Baroque art but also showcases the enduring influence of ancient legends on artists throughout history. In this scene, Aeneas, the legendary hero of Troy, carries his elderly father Anchises while rescuing small statues of their household gods amidst the burning city. The composition exudes emotion and movement, characteristic of Barocci's style, with intricate engravings that foreshadowed the rise of Baroque art in the following century. The image emphasizes Aeneas and Anchises' virtuous dedication to their home and family as they escape from destruction. Accompanying them are Aeneas's young son Ascanius and his wife Creusa. However, Creusa's separation from the group hints at her tragic fate as she falls behind and gets lost when Greek invaders overrun Troy. This print reflects how ancient legends like the Trojan War continued to inspire artists long after their initial popularity during the Renaissance era. It serves as a testament to Carracci's skill in capturing both historical narratives and human emotions within a single artwork. Displayed at The Cleveland Museum of Art, this remarkable piece reminds us that even centuries later, these timeless stories continue to captivate our imagination through visual representations like this one by Agostino Carracci.
