Monument To Rising
The monument at Glenfinnan, at the head of Loch Shiel, Inverness-shire, which marks the spot where Bonnie Prince Charlie (1720 - 1788) raised his familys standard (his grandfather was the deposed James II) at a gathering of Jacobite troops on August 19th 1745. The army he had organised for an attempt to reclaim the British throne was unsuccessful and the rebellion, known as the 45 Uprising, ended at Culloden where 1, 200 Scots died. Bonnie Prince Charlie went into hiding until Flora Macdonald helped him to escape to the continent where he spent the rest of his life. (Photo by Alfred Hind Robinson/Getty Images)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the solemn beauty of the Monument to Rising at Glenfinnan, Inverness-shire. Standing proudly at the head of Loch Shiel, this monument holds great historical significance as it marks the exact spot where Bonnie Prince Charlie raised his family's standard in 1745. Bonnie Prince Charlie, also known as Charles Edward Stuart, was determined to reclaim the British throne for his family. However, despite organizing a formidable army of Jacobite troops and their fervent support, his attempt ultimately proved unsuccessful. The rebellion came to a tragic end at Culloden, where 1,200 brave Scots lost their lives. Following this devastating defeat, Bonnie Prince Charlie sought refuge and went into hiding until Flora Macdonald selflessly aided him in escaping to the continent. From thereon he spent the remainder of his life far from home. The photograph beautifully captures both the grandeur and serenity surrounding this historic site. With its panoramic view showcasing Scotland's breathtaking landscape and an imposing monument that stands tall against time's passage, one cannot help but feel a sense of awe when gazing upon it. Alfred Hind Robinson skillfully captured not just a moment frozen in time but also an emblematic reminder of Scotland's tumultuous past. This print serves as a poignant tribute to those who fought valiantly for their beliefs during the 45 Uprising while offering viewers an opportunity for reflection on history's enduring impact.
