Pattern 1885 cavalry sword scabbard (metal)

5925741 Pattern 1885 cavalry sword scabbard (metal) by British School, (19th century); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: Pattern 1885 cavalry sword scabbard.
Some cavalry regiments of the British Army which fought during the early stages of the Boer War (1899-1902) were armed with the Patterns of 1890 and 1899. The outbreak of war necessitated the issue of all weapons, current and obsolete, held in store. This sword was originally issued to the 3rd Light Dragoons, then the Royal Horse Artillery and finally, in South Africa, to the Natal Volunteer units. Due to the Boers excellent long-range sniping, the bright finish of British swords quickly proved disadvantageous and most hilts and scabbards were painted khaki in the field to minimise glare.); © National Army Museum

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a Pattern 1885 cavalry sword scabbard, a relic from the 19th century British School. Housed in the National Army Museum in London, this artifact holds a rich history within its metal frame. During the early stages of the Boer War (1899-1902), certain cavalry regiments of the British Army were equipped with Patterns of 1890 and 1899. As war broke out, all weapons - both current and obsolete - were hastily issued to troops on the frontlines. Originally belonging to the esteemed 3rd Light Dragoons, this sword eventually found its way to the Royal Horse Artillery before being deployed in South Africa for use by Natal Volunteer units. The outbreak of conflict brought about unforeseen challenges for British forces facing off against skilled Boer snipers. The bright finish of their swords proved disadvantageous as it attracted unwanted attention due to glare. To counteract this vulnerability, most hilts and scabbards were painted khaki in order to minimize reflection under field conditions. This remarkable photograph not only captures an exquisite piece of military history but also serves as a poignant reminder of how warfare often necessitates adaptation and resourcefulness on behalf of armed forces. It stands as a testament to the bravery and ingenuity displayed by those who fought during that tumultuous period in history.
