EDITORS COMMENTS
This print by Jane Sweeney showcases the magnificent Qala-i-Ikhtiyar-ud-din, located inside the Citadel in Herat, Afghanistan. Steeped in history and architectural marvel, this fortress was originally constructed by none other than Alexander the Great himself. However, it took its present form under the skilled craftsmanship of Malik Fakhruddin in 1305 A. D. The walls of this citadel have witnessed countless battles and conquests throughout centuries. Legendary conquerors such as Genghis Khan and Tamerlane fought beneath these very walls, leaving behind an indelible mark on its storied past. The Qala-i-Ikhtiyar-ud-din has faced attacks from various empires including the Ghaznavids, Seljuks, Ghorids, Monghuls, Timurids, Safavids and many others. Today, this historical gem is managed by the department of Historical Monuments under Afghanistan's Ministry of Information Culture and Tourism. Its dominant yellow hue stands out against a backdrop that represents the Middle East region's rich cultural heritage. Jane Sweeney's expertly captured photograph allows us to appreciate not only the architectural brilliance but also serves as a reminder of our collective human history. As we gaze upon this image print with awe-inspiring admiration for its resilience over time; let us remember that it holds within its ancient walls stories untold yet waiting to be discovered by generations to come.
