1912 Senior TT

Senior TT winner Frank Applebee (Scott) passes through Keppel Gate, with Tates Cottage in the background. Before regular marshalling took place for practicing, it was the first rider on the roads duty to open the gate! The gatepost was a hazard; one day the Highway Board found it leaning against their office door, they took the hint and left it off for the races. Tates Cottage was corrupted to Kates Cottage by a radio commentator in the 1930s, the name has stuck to this day

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print from the 1912 Senior TT, we witness the victorious Frank Applebee on his Scott motorcycle as he skillfully navigates through Keppel Gate. The backdrop of Tates Cottage adds a touch of rustic charm to the scene. Interestingly, before regular marshalling procedures were implemented for practicing, it was customary for the first rider on the roads to assume the duty of opening this very gate. However, there was a peculiar hazard associated with it - one day, much to everyone's surprise, the Highway Board discovered that the gatepost had mysteriously ended up leaning against their office door! Taking this as a not-so-subtle hint, they decided to leave off the gate during races. It is worth noting that over time, Tates Cottage underwent an amusing transformation in name due to a radio commentator's slip of tongue in the 1930s. What used to be known as Tates Cottage became forever etched into history as Kates Cottage. This remarkable photograph captures not only an iconic moment in racing history but also sheds light on some intriguing anecdotes surrounding these legendary races. It serves as a testament to both Applebee's triumph and how even small details like gates and cottages can become woven into motorsport folklore.
