13132556. Orbicular batfish, Platax orbicularis, drifting next to a dead leaf fallen
Orbicular batfish, Platax orbicularis, drifting next to a dead leaf fallen from the mangrove. Young fish have a curious behavior related to feeding and to protect themselves from the numerous predators of the mangrove. They assume a lying position allowing themselves to be carried immobile by the current, looking like a dead leaf. Its brownish coloration with dark spots further reinforces this mimic effect. They often assume this behaviour by placing themselves in the vicinity of dead leaves carried by the current as is the case with the animal in this photo. They live in shallow protected coastal waters to deep, somewhat silty habitats. Adults are found singly or in small groups and occasionally in large schools. Juveniles occur singly or in small groups among mangroves and inner sheltered lagoons while adults move out to open waters over sandy areas of deep lagoons, channels, and seaward reefs to a depth of at least 30 m. Leaf or Fish? The Master of Mimicry Strikes Again!
EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this photo print, we witness the incredible camouflage skills of the orbicular batfish. Drifting gracefully next to a fallen leaf from the mangrove, this young fish has perfected its curious behavior to both feed and protect itself from predators. By assuming a lying position and allowing itself to be carried immobile by the current, it cleverly resembles a dead leaf. Its brownish coloration with dark spots further reinforces this mimic effect, making it almost indistinguishable from its surroundings. It's fascinating to observe how these juvenile batfish often seek out dead leaves carried by the current as their preferred hiding spot. They truly blend in seamlessly with their environment! From shallow coastal waters to deep silty habitats, these remarkable creatures can be found either alone or in small groups. While juveniles prefer the safety of mangroves and inner lagoons, adults venture out into open waters over sandy areas. So next time you're exploring underwater realms or visiting an aquarium, keep an eye out for these masters of disguise! You might just come across an orbicular batfish effortlessly mimicking a drifting leaf – nature's very own magician at work.
