White Sands National Monument, New Mexico, USA.
Rhus trilobata
As the dunes move on, the Sumac's roots allow the plant to hold on to the sand soil needed to keep it alive and at the same height as when the dune was present. The glistening dunes of White Sands in the Tularosa Basin are not sand, but fine gypsum, deposited on an ancient seabed 250 million years ago. Gypsum, a form of calcium sulfate, is water soluble and washes away. But geological forces here created a basin with no outlet.

Sumac's Survival Secret - Hanging on for Dear Sand!
EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this photo print, TD-1859 captures the incredible resilience of Skunkbush Sumac in the mesmerizing dune fields of White Sands National Monument. As the shifting sands dance with the wind, this woody plant unveils its secret weapon to stay rooted and alive. With roots that act as anchors, Skunkbush Sumac defies gravity by gripping onto every grain of sand it can find. It's a botanical tightrope act that allows this remarkable plant to maintain its height even as the dunes migrate across time. But what makes these glistening dunes truly extraordinary is their composition. Unlike ordinary sand, they are made up of fine gypsum particles deposited over 250 million years ago on an ancient seabed. Gypsum may be water-soluble and prone to washing away, but Mother Nature had other plans for this basin. Geological forces conspired to create a unique phenomenon - a basin with no outlet. This ingenious design traps precious moisture within the sandy embrace of White Sands, providing just enough sustenance for plants like Skunkbush Sumac to thrive against all odds. So next time you gaze at Thomas Dressler's arty masterpiece capturing tranquility amidst an atmospheric desert landscape, remember the tenacity and ingenuity behind those vibrant green leaves clinging tightly to their sandy stage.
