In 1831 construction began on Belle Tout lighthouse on the next headland west from Beachy Head

In 1831 construction began on Belle Tout lighthouse on the next headland west from Beachy Head. It became operational in 1834. Because mist and low clouds could hide the light of Belle Tout, another lighthouse was built in the sea below Beachy Head. It was 43 m in height and became operational in October 1902. For more than 80 years, the red-and-white striped tower was manned by three lighthouse keepers. Their job was to maintain the light, which rotates two white flashes every 20 seconds and is visible 26 miles (42 km) out to sea. Trinity House announced in June 2010 that in late September 2010, the light is to be reduced to 8 nautical miles (15 km) and the fog signal discontinued. The lighthouse was fully automated in 1983 and the keepers withdrawn

Beachy Head Lighthouse - A Striped Marvel Standing Strong Against the Elements!

EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this photo print, we witness the remarkable Beachy Head Lighthouse proudly perched on the edge of a majestic cliff. With its iconic red-and-white stripes, it stands as a symbol of resilience against erosion and the relentless power of the English Channel. Dating back to 1831, when construction began on Belle Tout lighthouse nearby, this magnificent structure became operational in 1834. However, due to mist and low clouds obscuring its light, another lighthouse was built below Beachy Head in 1902. For over eight decades, three brave keepers manned this towering beacon day and night. Their duty? To maintain a rotating light that emitted two dazzling white flashes every 20 seconds – visible an astonishing 26 miles out at sea! Ships sailing through these treacherous waters relied on this guiding light for safe passage. Over time, technology advanced and Trinity House announced in June 2010 that automation would replace human intervention. In late September that year, with a touch of nostalgia tinged with progress, the light's range was reduced to eight nautical miles while bidding farewell to its fog signal. Now fully automated since 1983, Beachy Head Lighthouse continues to stand tall as a testament to human ingenuity and adaptability. So next time you find yourself gazing at this mesmerizing print hanging on your wall or desk – remember how it has weathered storms both natural and technological throughout history!
