EDITORS COMMENTS
This print transports us to a serene garden in traditional Japan, where two Geishas gracefully tend to the plants. The scene is filled with an array of pots, each displaying its unique shape and size. One Geisha kneels down attentively, delicately caring for a bed of vibrant Marigolds. Created by Utagawa Toyokuni in the 19th century, this image showcases his mastery of woodblock art and his focus on capturing the beauty of women. It belongs to a series featuring Meiko (Geisha girls), with this particular print being number 34 in the collection published by Tstutaya Kichizo. The Geishas are dressed impeccably in kimonos, their geta sandals adding an authentic touch to their attire as they work diligently among bonsai trees and cherry blossoms. Their obedience and dedication shine through as they nurture nature's creations. The composition exudes romance and love, with patterns that reflect Japanese culture's rich traditions. Against an urban backdrop under the moonlit night sky, these affectionate figures bring life to the stillness surrounding them. Bernard Allum has preserved this exquisite piece within his personal collection, allowing us to appreciate its timeless beauty today. As we gaze upon it, we are reminded of the delicate balance between human beings and nature – a harmony that has been cherished throughout Japanese history.
